A letter, and a few other things

For Breanna

Some things I should have said out loud.

Breanna,

I’m not great at saying things out loud. So I built you a page instead, which is either very me or very strange. Probably both.

I’ve thought a lot about how things went early on. I ended something a few days before your birthday, and I handled it badly, and it cost you a day that should have been yours. I’m sorry for that. For the timing, and for the way I did it. You deserved more care from me in that moment than I gave you, and I’ve known it ever since.

What I didn’t expect was everything after. That you’d keep showing up. That we’d keep talking, keep hanging out, keep being whatever this is. I’ve never found the right word for it, and I’ve stopped looking. Whatever it’s called, it’s one of the good things in my life, and I don’t say that lightly.

Here’s what I know about you.

You have a kind heart. That sounds like a small thing to say, and it isn’t. Most people are kind when it’s convenient. You’re kind on purpose, on days that give you no reason to be, and you don’t keep score. That’s rare, and it gets rarer every year.

You love hard. The people you call yours could not ask for a fiercer corner. You’d go to war for a friend and be back in time to check on their dog. And I’ve never seen anyone light up around animals the way you do, like each one is someone you’ve been waiting to meet.

And you’ve carried a lot. You’ve lost more these past few years than most people lose in a lifetime, and you didn’t let it make you hard. That isn’t luck. That’s a choice you keep making, and I notice it.

You’ve shown me more grace than I’ve earned, and more than I’ve managed to give back. I can’t promise to make that even. But I can tell you that you’re seen, that you matter to me, and that I’m grateful you’re in my life. All of that is true, and it stays true.

Thank you for being exactly who you are.

— Rutvik

P.S. It’s pink. Obviously.

For the record

In case you ever forget.

  1. You’re kind when nobody’s watching. That’s the only kind that counts.
  2. Every animal you meet gets greeted like an old friend. They can tell.
  3. Your people know you’d show up at 3 a.m., no questions asked.
  4. You’ve had every reason to close off, and you haven’t.
  5. You mean well. Always. It’s rarer than it should be.
  6. You’ve been more patient with me than I’ve made easy.

This page isn’t going anywhere.

Come back to it whenever you need reminding.
